Today, June 25, 2021, at approximately 6 a.m., an inmate at the Norfolk City Jail was transferred to the Norfolk City Jail’s Medical Office after experiencing breathing issues. While in the medical office under observation by nursing staff, the inmate went into cardiac arrest around 6:30 a.m. Deputies and medical staff immediately performed life-saving measures, including CPR. The inmate was transported to Sentara Norfolk General hospital where she was later pronounced deceased at 7:56 a.m. No foul play is suspected.
The inmate, Tacarra Taylor, 34, has been housed in the Norfolk City Jail since November 12, 2019 on charges from both the cities of Norfolk and Chesapeake.
Per state law, the Medical Examiner’s Office will review the case. The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office and the Norfolk Police Department will each conduct separate investigations into the incident, which is standard procedure. The incident has also been reported to the VA Department of Corrections, which reviews all in-custody deaths.
The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office extends our condolences to the family of Ms. Taylor.
