The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office is a values-driven organization committed to public safety, public service, and public trust. Sheriff Joe Baron’s motto is the NSO should serve in the spirit of the Golden Rule: treat others the way we wish to be treated.
Our team strives to have integrity in all things, respect for others, duty without prejudice, pride without ego, and team before self. The Norfolk Sheriff's Office meets the highest professional law enforcement standards by consistently winning accreditation from the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission.
In 2019 we adopted our vision to make a difference in the lives of others as far as we can reach. That includes our emploees, inmates, and our community members.
The NSO is also a great place to work! Our office has joined Inside Business Publication's hall of fame for "Best Places to Work in Hampton Roads."
The Sheriff's Office has different responsibilities compared to the Norfolk Police Department. We serve our community by running the Norfolk City Jail, courthouse security, and delivering legal papers, like evictions and subpoenas. The NSO team is committed to providing crime prevention and services for seniors and kids in Norfolk. We are proud to have numerous programs to give inmates second chances, including allowing non-violent inmates to work in the community, and at local businesses.
The Sheriff is dedicated to improving the morale of our deputies, who work hard every day to maintain our city’s jail. Deputies are responsible for the safety and security of nearly 1,000 inmates on a daily basis. Sheriff Baron is always trying to find ways to appreciate our deputies, to show them how much they are valued. He takes pride in serving his employees by providing a great work environment, and opportunities to grow and advance in a rewarding career in law enforcement and public service.
