Sheriff Joe Baron credits the keen eye and quick thinking of a corporal working the Norfolk City Jail mailroom with stopping drugs from entering the facility.

On Tuesday, April 13, 2021, a Norfolk Sheriff’s Office Corporal screening incoming mail intercepted a package containing Suboxone intended for an inmate in the jail. Due to corporal’s quick thinking, the narcotic never entered the facility and was immediately reported to our Security Threat Unit. The responding deputies were able to determine who sent the package to the facility and on Thursday, April 15, 2021, Norfolk Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Ashley Pinkett, 24, a.k.a. “Ashley Gaye” of the 9500 block of Granby Street in Norfolk, VA. Ms. Pinkett has been charged with one count of Conspiracy to Deliver Drugs to Prisoners or Committed Persons (State Code §18.2-474.1) and two counts of Attempted Delivery of Drugs to Prisoners or Committed Persons (State Code §18.2-474.1). A booking photo of Ms. Pinkett is attached.

Additionally, the inmate, Jermaine Gaye, has been charged with one count of Conspiracy Delivery of Drugs to Prisoners or Committed Persons (State Code § 18.2-474.1). A booking photo of Mr. Gaye is also attached.

Suboxone is a schedule III narcotic and is used to treat opiate addiction. The narcotic can help with side effects for those who have an opiate addiction or can be used to obtain a “high” for those who have never used opiates.

“Every day our deputies are committed to life, health, safety, and security. Our mailroom is one of our first lines of defense in protecting both our inmates and our staff. Paying attention to any discrepancies among mail packages is of the utmost importance. I am proud of my staff for their swift and thorough investigation,” Sheriff Joe Baron said.
