SCAM WARNING! Once again, someone posing as a Norfolk Sheriff's Office employee is targeting residents
The Norfolk Sheriff's Office has again received reports from residents who have recently gotten a phone call and/or message from someone claiming to be from the Norfolk Sheriff's Office.
This time, the caller used the name "Sgt. Gill," and as in previous incidents, informed residents that they have missed jury duty and have a warrant for their arrest. He continues by telling the citizen that they need to pay a fine or risk being jailed.
THIS IS A SCAM.
As a reminder, the Norfolk Sheriff's Office will NEVER call asking for money and correspondence regarding jury duty is always done through the mail.
In this instance, when we attempted to call the number which showed up in caller ID, we got a message that the number was "no longer available." This could also indicate that the number which showed up in caller ID had been "spoofed."
If you have fallen victim to this scam and sent money to the callers, please contact the Norfolk Sheriff's Office's Consumer Protection Unit to file a report.
PLEASE HELP US SPREAD THE WORD!!!
