New tunnel makes transporting inmates to court easier and safer

Bennett in tunnelOn Tuesday, March 28, the Norfolk Sheriff's Office hit a major milestone.

After months of construction, a tunnel connecting the jail building to the new consolidated courthouse was completed and opened for use.

Prior to this tunnel being built, deputies had to escort inmates to court using a path outside of the jail building- which took a lot of time and manpower.

The new tunnel system, which prevents everyone from having to walk outside, makes the transportation process easier and safer for the inmates, the deputies, and the public.

We had a successful first day transporting 52 inmates to their court appearances, and we are looking forward to the completion of more projects in the coming months.
