From time-to-time the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office Consumer Protection Unit will receive calls from citizens stating someone from the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office called and told them they missed jury duty and must pay a fine or will be arrested. It seems this scam is ramping up again and we are hearing from more and more citizens who have received these phone calls recently.

As a reminder, the Norfolk Sheriff's Office will NEVER call asking for money and correspondence regarding jury duty is always done through the mail. Additionally, we will NEVER call and tell someone they have a warrant for their arrest.

“Scams like these are rather common and oftentimes the caller will use the name of an actual employee of the agency in hopes of tricking the citizen into sending money. We appreciate citizen contacting us to make us aware of this scam and are thankful they didn’t send money to the caller,” states Captain Imprevento of the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office Consumer Protection Unit.

We ask that any resident who has fallen victim to this scam and sent money to the callers, please contact the Norfolk Police Department's Economic Crimes Division or the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office Consumer Protection Unit at 757-664-4344 to file a report.

For more information about scams like this and others, please visit the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office Consumer Protection Unit website at https://norfolk-sheriff.com/fraudwatch.
