The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office and Norfolk Police Department are investigating the death of an inmate that occurred on August 10, 2024. While the investigation into the incident remains ongoing, the preliminary investigation reveals the inmate suffered a medical emergency while being housed at the Norfolk City Jail. After being attended to by medical personnel inside the jail, the inmate was transported to a local hospital for treatment where she was pronounced deceased hours later.
The inmate has been identified as 33-year-old Saleia M. Gregory. Ms. Gregory was booked in the Norfolk City Jail on June 27,2024. Next of kin has been notified.
In addition to the Norfolk Police Department investigation, the incident has also been reported to the Virginia Department of Corrections, which reviews all in-custody deaths. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death. No foul play is suspected.
