In-Custody Death

NORFOLK, VA — On Monday, January 14th at 11:55pm an NSO deputy came upon an inmate who appeared to be standing in his cell. Upon closer examination, the deputy noticed the inmate was non-responsive and his body was suspended just off the ground. The deputy immediately called for backup and deputies began performing life saving measures until medical staff arrived and took over. EMS was also called. Upon arrival, EMS pronounced the inmate deceased.

A mental health counselor was made available to inmates immediately following the incident. Additionally, our NSO chaplain is available for any staff members who responded.

The inmate has been identified as Daizhaun Danico Johnson, 18.

The safety and security of those in our custody is always our top concern. Per protocol, NSO will conduct an internal review of this incident, and the Norfolk Police Department will handle the incident as an undetermined death investigation.

Johnson was booked into Norfolk City Jail on 9/24/18 on charges of Failure to Appear and Auto Theft. He did not have a bond. His booking photo is attached.

While at this initial stage of the investigation no foul play is suspected, official cause and manner of death will be determined by the medical examiner. Questions regarding the investigation should be directed to the Norfolk Police Department.
