This morning the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office was notified of a scam taking place in which a male caller is contacting citizens and identifying himself as Lt. Col. Handley with the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office. The caller informs citizens they have missed subpoenas and need to pay fines. The caller is calling from XXX-XXX-XXXX. Thankfully the citizens recognized this as a scam and called to report the incident.

We have seen this scam multiple times within the past year, but this is the first time they’ve used Lt. Col Handley’s name and number. In the past callers have identified themselves as Lt. Snyder with the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office and another time identified as Lt. Reed with the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office.

While we have issued these warnings in the past, we feel it is important to continue to spread the word about these scams and reiterate that the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office will NEVER request money or payment over the phone.

On our website, www.norfolk-sheriff.com, we have a section dedicated to the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office Consumer Protection Unit (CPU). Our CPU is designed to educated citizens on how to protect themselves from scammers, con-artists, and criminals who are trying to take their hard-earned money. On the website, you will find information about common scams, how to report the scams, and red flags to look out for, as well as information from the FBI and Better Business Bureau. For more information about the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office CPU, please visit https://www.norfolk-sheriff.com/fraudwatch.
