Microcomputer System Analyst

The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office is seeking a Microcomputer Systems Analyst who will help develop, test, and maintain hardware & software to meet the requirements of the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office. The incumbent will assist staff with providing standards, instruction, and procedures involving the Information Technology department while providing Help Desk support for computer hardware and software issues.

This is a full-time position; Salary range is $35,575 – $56,233

Duties of this position include:

  • Application Administration: Perform system administration for desktop management and other commercial off-the-shelf application software. This includes: understanding the purpose, features, functions, and use of the application, installing, updating and maintaining application software on the severs and clients; testing for correct operation and functionality; documenting automated and manual processes, monitoring system access, availability and efficiency; identifying, troubleshooting and solving system problems; creating and running queries and reports from system data; monitoring and interpreting data from the queries and reports and recommending action; training users on system use as needed.
  • Software Management: Install and update software on computers using desktop management and other remote software management tools. This includes: monitoring vendor sites for required and recommended updates and patches; recommending updates and patches for enterprise-wide or work group installation; coordinating with other technical staff, management, and customers to review recommendations and schedule installs, updates and patches; designing and developing installation packets and scripts when necessary; running updates, “pushing” patches and executing scripts, testing results; documenting processes and actions.
  • Problem Solving: Perform analytical and problem-solving activities and arrive at sound solutions; diagnose and resolve computer hardware, software access, and security issues.
  • Computer Services/Help Desk: Provide excellent customer service and IT Help Desk support. This includes diagnosing and resolving computer hardware, software access and security issues by correcting problems and desktop and laptop computers, ruggedized mobile computers, tablets, smartphones, computer peripherals, and associated software. Work may be performed on-site at customer locations or remotely using software diagnostic and management tools. Must create, update and resolve problems and tasks using an automated work management system. Must correctly and appropriately answer customer questions about features, functions and operation of computer hardware, peripherals and standard software, and explain technology processes and policies. Must exhibit outstanding telephone and customer services skills.
  • Documentation: Create, document, and modify computer hardware and software installation troubleshooting procedures for technical staff. Provide assistance with developing and testing customer documentation, Update work order documentation and provide assistance with hardware and software inventory and license management.
  • Work environment will involve job duties in all possible NSO work locations. This will include inside the correctional facility and possible direct contact with inmates.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements:

  • Formal Education / Knowledge Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with a two year Associate's degree, Diploma or equivalent from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school.
  • Experience Two years of experience in Management Information Systems.

    • Valid Driver’s License
    • Security+
    • Network+
    • Hyper V
  • Reading: Work requires the ability to read technical manuals, schematics, instructions and procedures
  • Math: Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Writing: Work requires the ability to write software installation manuals, reports, and general correspondence.
  • Managerial: N/A
  • Budget Responsibility: N/A
  • Supervisory / Organizational Control: Job has no responsibility for the direction or supervision of others.
  • Complexity: Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Work requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of policies, standards, and precedents.
  • Interpersonal / Human Relations Skills: Contacts others within the organization. Works with individuals outside NSO who may belong to professional or peer organizations. Working with various state and federal agencies may also be required.Performs related duties as required by the Norfolk Sheriff Office.

AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS

The following will cause the processing of the applicant to be immediately discontinued:

  • Criminal Record:
    • Conviction of any felony.
    • Conviction of driving while intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance (within three (3) years).
    • Conviction of any charge of domestic assault or violence against a family member.
    • Conviction of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude (i.e., larceny, embezzlement, perjury, etc.).

  • Driving Record:
    • Current driver’s license suspension.
    • Driver’s license suspension within the last twelve (12) months.
    • Conviction of a misdemeanor hit and run.
    • Extensive traffic violation convictions exceeding minus five (-5) DMV demerit points.

  • Drug Usage:
    • Use of heroin, cocaine, or illegal hallucinogen within the past five (5) years
    • Use of heroin by injection at any time.
    • Any substantiated illegal act other than use (i.e., sale, manufacture, etc.) of any narcotic, controlled substance, or dangerous drug, as defined by State and Federal Law, except marijuana.
