811 Marketplace Food Service Worker

The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office is seeking a self-motivated person to join our team to perform food management duties within the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office for our 811 Marketplace services. Their primary functions are to plan, direct, or coordinate activities of the 811 Market Place Department that serves food and beverages to inmates housed within the Norfolk City Jail.


Salary Information
  • This is a part-time position; Salary range is $19.95 - $31.93 per hour (based on experience).

Duties
  • Prepare a variety of foods according to customers' orders or supervisors' instructions, following approved procedures.
  • Clean work areas, equipment, utensils, dishes, and silverware.
  • Package take-out foods and/or serve food to customers and inmates.
  • Portion and wrap the food or place it directly on plates for service to patrons.
  • Place food trays over food warmers for immediate service or store them in refrigerated storage cabinets.
  • Inform supervisors when supplies are getting low, or equipment is not working properly.
  • Assist cooks and kitchen staff with various tasks as needed and provide cooks with needed items.
  • Receive and store food supplies, equipment, and utensils in refrigerators, cupboards, and other storage areas.
  • Remove trash and clean kitchen garbage containers.
  • Carry food supplies, equipment, and utensils to and from storage and work areas.
  • Scrape leftovers from dishes into garbage containers.
  • Keep records of the quantities of food used.
  • Instruct inmates as it relates to food preparation and clean up.
  • Work environment will be within the correctional facility and involve direct contact with inmates. 
  • Perform any other related work as required by the Norfolk Sheriff's Office. 
Requirements
  • Formal Education / Knowledge: High School graduate or equivalent; specific vocational, administrative, or technical knowledge obtainable through six months to one year of advanced study or training past the high school level (through either city in-house or an outside educational institution)
  • Experience: Two years of food service experience preferred. Computer skills and correctional experience are a plus.
  • Certifications and Other Requirements: Need a Food Handlers Card or the ability to obtain one. Serve safe or ability to obtain one. Valid Driver's License.
  • Reading: Work requires the ability to read technical manuals, policies and procedures, and legal documents.
  • Math: Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, algebra, and statistics.
  • Writing: Work requires the ability to write technical instructions, policies and procedures, employee evaluations, contracts and various reports.
  • Managerial: Managerial responsibilities include determining department requirements and coordinating the implementation of solutions.
  • Budget Responsibility: Research of documents, compiles data for computer entry, and/or enters or oversees data entry and has responsibility for monitoring budget expenditures (typically non-discretionary expenditures) for a work unit of less than bureau size.
  • Supervisory / Organizational Control: Work requires supervising and monitoring performance for a regular group of employees in a work unit including providing input on hiring/disciplinary actions and work objectives/effectiveness, and realigning work as needed.
  • Complexity: Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Work requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of policies, standards, and precedents.
  • Interpersonal / Human Relations Skills: Contacts others within the organization. Works with individuals inside and outside the city who may belong to professional or peer organizations. Working with various state and federal agencies may also be required. Vendors and suppliers may also be called upon for information on purchases, suppliers, or products. Meetings and discussions may be conducted with customers, vendors, and sales representatives.
Automatic Disqualifiers

The following will cause the processing of the applicant to be immediately discontinued:

  • Criminal Record:
    • Conviction of any felony.
    • Conviction of driving while intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance (within three (3) years).
    • Conviction of any charge of domestic assault or violence against a family member.
    • Conviction of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude (i.e., larceny, embezzlement, perjury, etc.).

  • Driving Record:
    • Current driver’s license suspension.
    • Driver’s license suspension within the last twelve (12) months.
    • Conviction of a misdemeanor hit and run.
    • Extensive traffic violation convictions exceeding minus five (-5) DMV demerit points.

  • Drug Usage:
    • Use of heroin, cocaine, or illegal hallucinogen within the past five (5) years
    • Use of heroin by injection at any time.
    • Any substantiated illegal act other than use (i.e., sale, manufacture, etc.) of any narcotic, controlled substance, or dangerous drug, as defined by State and Federal Law, except marijuana.
