Barclift and Baron 16x9It is with great sadness I share with you the loss of Corporal Gibran Barclift, a beloved member of the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office family. Early this morning, while on duty, Corporal Barclift had what appears to have been a medical emergency. His team and medical staff responded quickly and worked valiantly to provide him medical help in an attempt to save him. He was rushed to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he passed away. He was not alone, as many of our staff were with him. He leaves behind family and loved ones including our own Corporal Lakiya Miller. Please keep them all in your prayers in their time of grief.
Corporal Barcliff joined the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office in November 2002. He was promoted to corporal in July 2017. He was cherished by all staff who he worked with. He knew his job and took care of his co-workers. He was funny and even tempered. He loved his job, his team, and his family. The love of his life for the last eight years has been Corporal Lakiya Miller. She and her girls will miss him greatly. He is survived by his father, one brother and two sisters.
Shrouded BadgeCorporal Miller expresses great gratitude for the outpouring of love from everyone. However, at this time she needs privacy. She would appreciate it if everyone would give her and her family some space to deal with her loss and grief. My prayers and thoughts are with her and I will respect her wishes.

The Senior Staff and I are here and available for anyone who needs help. We have met with members of his current assignment on C Team and on B Team, where he served for years. We also have NSO Chaplains available for prayer and consultation as needed. If you are stressed and need help, please refer to Memo 17-007 as a guide to gain assistance or notify your supervisor. Chaplain Chris Amos is available by phone at 757-803-4969.
I encourage everyone to live each day with hope and in the spirit of the “golden rule.” Always treat others as you wish to be treated and remember to show your appreciation and love for those around you. I would also encourage you to take advantage of the annual medical physicals available to you through your medical provider. This is the best way to ensure your health is where it needs to be so that you be there to enjoy your family and friends as you grow old together.
Services for Corporal Barclift were held Wednesday, August 23 at Gethsemane Community Fellowship Church in Norfolk, VA.

Special thanks to Tommy Graves and Rev. Dr. Kirk Houston.
