About the Position:

This person provides inmate substance use counseling services using an evidence based approach for assessment, treatment planning, counseling, service planning, and referral for service for inmates.

Supervision Received:

  • Works under the general supervision of the Programs Director or designee.

Supervision Exercised:

  • None.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Able to work inside a Jail Environment.
  • Provides comprehensive assessments for new Inmates to the Residential Substance Abuse Blocks with regards to needs and the appropriate placement into the program; develops individualized treatment plans, which respond to the needs of the person served as identified by the assessment and coordinates the initial and periodic treatment plans with the Medical Services component; determines from assessment the appropriate services to be provided, the most appropriate service providers, and ensures that the person served is linked with those services.
  • Provides individual and group substance use counseling services as outlined in each treatment plan; provides crisis counseling on an as needed basis.
  • Participates in regular post released supervision as agreed upon with the direct supervisor.
  • Monitors persons receiving services from other service providers and advocates for the person to ensure accessibility and acceptability of services.
  • Keeps up-to-date, well documented records which comply with Federal, State, and agency requirements; collects and reports service statistics and data on persons served as required.
  • Develops appropriate instructional materials and individualized reentry plans to meet inmate rehabilitation goals.
  • Utilizes guest speakers and other forms of creative instruction that will motivate the inmates to their rehabilitation goals.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding employees, vendors, inmates, outside agencies, etc.

Desired Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education and Experience:
    • 4 Year College Degree
    • Minimum two years experience providing Substance Use Disorder counseling or treatment services

Licenses and Other Requirements:

  • Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC), Master Addiction Counselor (MAC), or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) certification/license required
  • Must pass a background investigation.
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with evidence based substance use treatment programs.
  • Best practices involving counseling services.
  • Ability to prepare program procedures and goals, assessments and treatment plans, client progress reviews and case records, staff training information, schedules, development plans, and performance evaluations.

Tools and Equipment Used

  • Requires frequent use of personal computer, including appropriate software.
  • Frequent use of telephone, copy machine and fax machine.
