About the Position:

The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office is seeking a self-motivated person to run a new and promising program within a correctional environment. This is a full time position.
Duties of this position include:

  • Assist in leading group classes where incarcerated parents and outside caregivers with minor children attend as whole group and in divided groups.
  • Conduct case management and advocacy for the incarcerated parents participating in the program
  • Develop service and discharge plans tailored for the inmate’s post incarceration period that include coordination with local CSBs, local private providers and/or contact with providers of community resources.
  • Coordinate with other staff, medical contractor and outside resources as directed by the Clinical supervisor.
  • Work with Clinical Supervisor and other staff to develop course lesson plans that accomplish the goals of the designated program.
  • Helps maintain program documentation including case management records, measurable outcomes and any other statistical reporting required to substantiate the program.
  • Performs other duties as needed by the program, upper management and the as assigned by the Sheriff
  • Employment with the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of all required pre-employment screening checks. Criminal background check results are reviewed and analyzed in accordance with applicable law and all appropriate factors are considered, including the nature and gravity of the offense(s), the amount of time that has passed since the commission of the offense(s), the relationship between the offense(s) and the job being sought, operating contract requirements and factors required by state law.

Requirements:

  • Formal Education / Knowledge: Successful completion of the requirements for graduation from a four (4) year college of university with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, psychology, criminal justice or related field. Qualifying experience may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the educational requirement.
  • Experience: Have any equivalent combination of the experience and training which provides the knowledge and ability necessary to perform the work. Have four (4) years experience providing social, psychological or correctional services to clients in a correctional facility or residential setting.
  • Certifications and Other Requirements: Must have a valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license (depending upon residency). Must have thorough knowledge of community oriented programming, including religious, social and family counseling activities. Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, philosophies, and practices of modern correctional systems with emphasis on rehabilitation and counseling.
  • Reading: Work requires the ability to read forms, documents and manuals used by the Norfolk Sheriff's Office.
  • Math: Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Writing: Work requires the ability to clearly write notes, fill out paperwork and generate reports.
  • Managerial: Managing the rehabilitation program provided by the Norfolk Sheriff Office.
  • Budget Responsibility: Assist in compiling budget data as required by the Clinical Supervisor
  • Supervisory / Organizational Control: Supervision over program participants and as needed with staff resources to accomplish daily needs of the program.
  • Complexity: Work involves choices of action within limits set by standard practices and procedures. A professional attitude and demeanor is required when dealing with others within and outside of the Norfolk Sheriff's Office.
  • Interpersonal / Human Relations Skills: Contact with others within and outside the Norfolk Sheriff's Office. These contacts may involve outside organizations and similar work units or organizations within the Norfolk Sheriff's Office in the day-to-day operations. A professional and courteous demeanor should be adhered to at all times.


Automatic Disqualifiers:

The following will cause the processing of the applicant to be immediately discontinued:

Criminal Record:

  1. Conviction of any felony
  2. Conviction of driving while intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance (within 3 years)
  3. Conviction of any charge of domestic assault or violence against a family member
  4. Conviction of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude (i.e., larceny, embezzlement, perjury, etc.)


Driving Record:

  1. Current driver’s license suspension
  2. Driver’s license suspension within the last 12 months.
  3. Conviction of a misdemeanor hit and run
  4. Extensive traffic violation convictions exceeding minus five (-5) DMV demerit points


Drug Usage:

  1. Use of heroin, cocaine, or illegal hallucinogen within the past 5 years
  2. Use of heroin by injection at any time
  3. Any substantiated illegal act, other than use (i.e., sale, manufacture, etc.) of any narcotic, controlled substance, or dangerous drug, as defined by State and Federal Law, except marijuana
  4. Use of marijuana or hashish within the past 12 months prior to submitting your application, or any time thereafter
