The Professional Standards department is responsible for investigating internal complaints or incidents and citizen complaints against NSO personnel. The command staff determines appropriate disciplinary actions for employees who violate policies.
In addition, Professional Standards monitors the driver’s license status of all NSO employees semi-annually.
The office also handles unclaimed bodies in the city of Norfolk. When a person dies without any relatives claiming the body, deputies work to track down family members. If a body is still unclaimed, deputies must obtain a court order to release the body to a funeral home for burial.
All complaints are addressed by the Internal Affairs Division of the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office.
