Summer Camp 2023

General Information:
The 2023 Sheriff Joe Baron Foundation Summer Camp will run for two weeks in July 2023. Each child can attend one week only. The camp will be held Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. during the weeks of July 10-14, 2023, and July 17-21, 2023. The camp is free for residents of Norfolk between the ages of 8 to 13.
Location:
The 2023 Sheriff Joe Baron Foundation Summer Camp is held at Camp Apasus located at 8420 Granby Street, Norfolk, VA 23505. The camp is located directly adjacent to Forest Lawn Cemetery, in the Bay View area of the city.
Staff:
Volunteers for camp consist of Norfolk Sheriff’s Office employees, Norfolk Police officers, Norfolk Fire-Rescue personnel, students from local universities and high schools, as well as individuals affiliated with service organizations. The entire staff of volunteers will be working under the direction of the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office Community Affairs Division. All volunteers are screened by the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office and required to attend Volunteer Orientation prior to camp.
Transportation:
Bus transportation will be provided by the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with Norfolk Public Schools. The bus routes will have limited stops, which are outlined below.
WEEK #1 BUS SCHEDULE – LOCATIONS & TIMES:
Morning bus schedule:
- Sherwood Forest Elementary School: Bus loop - 8:05 a.m.
- Norview High School: Bus loop - 8:15 a.m.
- Bayview Elementary School: Bus loop across from 8635 Sturgis St. - 8:30 a.m.
- Merrimack Landing Apts.: Corner of Monitor Way and Alabama Rd. - 8:45 a.m.
Afternoon bus schedule:
- Merrimack Landing Apts.: Corner of Monitor Way and Alabama Rd. - 2:40 p.m.
- Bayview Elementary School: Bus loop across from 8635 Sturgis St. - 2:55 p.m.
- Norview High School: Bus loop - 3:10 p.m.
- Sherwood Forest Elementary School: Bus loop - 3:20 p.m.
WEEK #2 BUS SCHEDULE WILL BE POSTED SOON!
It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to have your child at the bus stop on time in the morning and be picked up in the afternoon. Bus routes are based on zip code information provided by participants and are subject to change. The Code of Conduct applies to all transportation during summer camp.
PARENT DROP OFF:
Morning Arrival:
8:40 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
Parents will enter Camp Apasus through the Granby Street camp entrance. Parents should pull up to the entrance of the camp where you will be greeted by one of our counselors. (Please do not park your car and get out.) After drop-off, parents will exit the camp parking lot through Forest Lawn Cemetery by pulling straight ahead and turning at the second right. This will take you back out to Granby Street, directly across from Gate 22 of Naval Station Norfolk. At this point you can turn left or right onto Granby Street. NOTE: Leaving camp through the entrance of Camp Apasus only allows motorists to make a right turn.
Afternoon Pick Up:
2:15 to 2:30 p.m.
Please be sure to have your ID ready at pick up to speed the process along.
IN CASE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER:
- Should there be "scattered" storms for the day - we will host summer camp.
- Should there be storms for the whole day - camp will be cancelled.
- We will notify the campers the day before and post it on the Norfolk Sheriff's Office website at www.norfolk-sheriff.com and on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/NorfolkVASheriff.
