IMPORTANT ALERT: Phone Scam Regarding Jury Duty

On behalf of Norfolk Sheriff’s Office, we ask that you please spread the word about a phone scam involving someone impersonating a Norfolk Deputy.

The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office has received dozens of phone calls from residents who’ve received these questionable phone calls. The person is informing residents that they have missed jury duty and need to pay a court fee or spend one day in jail. Residents are then being instructed to put $1,000 on a prepaid card while they are on the phone with the individual. If they hang up, the individual threatens to dispatch a unit to arrest the victim. Once the money is on the prepaid card, residents are being asked to read the card number off to the person impersonating a deputy so he can verify the money went into a “kiosk.”

If anyone receives any phone calls regarding this scam or similar scams, they are asked per the Norfolk Police Department to call Economic Crimes at (757) 664-7018. During off hours, people are asked to call General Assignment at (757) 664-7026.

Again, this IS a scam. Correspondence regarding jury duty is ALWAYS done through the mail. The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office will NEVER call asking for money.

Please feel free to reach out if any additional information is needed.
