ESGR LogoSheriff Baron was presented with an award on behalf of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. He and the Norfolk Sheriff's Office were both nominated by NSO Deputy Stephen Smith, who is also a sergeant in the Army National Guard.

Sheriff Baron would like to share with you what Deputy Smith wrote in his own words. He was presented with a certificate from the ESGR that is proudly displayed inside of the jail.

"I am incredibly grateful to be employed by the Norfolk Sheriff's Office under Sheriff Joseph Baron. The sheriff's office has been very supportive of my service with the Army National Guard and of myself as an individual.

"Prior to my mobilization, I had recieved notification for a possible deploymnet that eventually resulted in myself not deploying. Despite the cancellation, the Norfolk Sheriff's Office made sure that I had ample time to take care of my pre-deployment training without penalty.

"A few months later, I was suddenly called to active service again. This time, I only had two weeks before I had to leave. Without hesitation, the sheriff's office made sure I was able to handle all of my personal matters before I began my active duty time. Throughout my pre-mob training and into my deployment, I have received numerous phone calls and e-mails from my agency, making sure that I was being taken care of.

ESGR presentation"Even though I told the sheriff's office that I am very well and that I had access to a variety of amenities, I started to recieve care packages that included everything from snacks to Norfolk Sheriff's Office apparel to wear to the gym.

"The Sheriff's Office has done and continues to do a great job at keeping me informed about the news happening within the agency, and I have never felt as if I have missed any important information. Prior to my deployment, I have had an immense appreciation for the Norfolk Sheriff's Office, and throughout my deployment, that appreciation has significantly grown.

"At the Norfolk Sheriff's Office, we are one big family. I could never thank Sheriff Joseph Baron and his dedicated staff of excellent leaders enough for the opportunity to be a part of this organization.

"I am very excited to return home and continue my career with the Norfolk Sheriff's Office - an organization that truly supports men and women in the Guard and the Reserve."
