Mental Health/Substance Abuse in Correctional Facilities Up for Discussion

On Friday, December 2, state, regional and local leaders will gather to discuss ways to help tackle mental health and substance abuse issues in correctional facilities across the Commonwealth.

The conversation will take place at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail (2690 Elmhurst Lane, Portsmouth) from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Besides Interim Superintendant Sheriff, Bob McCabe and Assistant Superintendant Linda Bryant, included on the list of attendees are Bill Hazel, Secretary of Health and Human Resources, Brian Moran, Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security, as well as dozens of Virginia’s policy advisors, senators, delegates and mental health experts.

"A meeting of this caliber is an important step in confronting 21st century correctional facility challenges,” Linda Bryant, Assistant Superintendent of the Hampton Roads Regional Jail said. “We’re going to address challenges faced here at the HRRJ and other state facilities, review recent steps we’ve taken to address those challenges, and most importantly, propose future steps to ensure we have a solid foundation to handle the same challenges,” she added.

This meeting is open to the media, and interviews with willing participants will be permitted. Further questions may be directed to Kaila DeRienzo, Public Information Officer for the Norfolk Sheriff's Office.
