Joe new staffpicHello. I’m Sheriff Joe Baron.

First of all, I want to thank the people of Norfolk for electing me in 2017 to serve as your Sheriff. I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to improve public safety in our great city.

My career in law enforcement has spanned more than 32 years, and it has been a great journey for me and my family. In that career, I’ve had the opportunity to serve the citizens of Norfolk with distinction and honor. This is a privilege I don’t take for granted.

When I became Sheriff, I created our new mission statement. It reads: “We are a values-driven team committed to public safety, public service, and public trust.” Our motto is to serve in the spirit of the Golden Rule: treat others the way we wish to be treated. Our team strives to have integrity in all things, respect for others, duty without prejudice, pride without ego, and team before self.

My first priority as Sheriff is to improve the morale of our deputies, who work hard every day to maintain our city’s jail. Our deputies are responsible for the safety and security of more than 1,000 inmates on a daily basis. Working inside a jail is a tough job. I am always trying to find ways to appreciate our deputies, to show them how much they are valued.

Most people don’t realize the difference between the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office, and the Norfolk Police Department. While police are the officers patrolling the streets and making arrests, Norfolk Sheriff’s Office deputies maintain the city’s jail, provide courthouse security, serve legal papers and organize safety programs for kids and seniors.

One of our biggest initiatives is improving safety in Norfolk by providing rehabilitation programs. The truth is that most inmates stay in jail for a short time, an average of two months, before returning to the community. We are proud to launch innovative efforts to provide more classes inside the jail to inspire inmates to rise above: from earning a GED or high school diploma to taking creative writing classes. As Sheriff, I look forward to increasing rehabilitation opportunities, teaching people to make better choices, and live meaningful lives free from crime -- for a safer Norfolk.

Now, a little bit about my background. Prior to joining the team here at NSO, I spent 26 years on the Norfolk Police Department, doing my job to the best of my ability, and always focusing on doing the right thing. While I was a homicide detective, I investigated 77 murders in our city, and solved all but seven. It is my passion for keeping people safe that inspires me to excellence every day.

I joined the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office with the same dedication to serve. For me, attitude is key to success. I pride myself on having a can-do attitude, a thankful attitude, and an attitude of honesty and trust.

In my office, I have a big white board that outlines my expectations of others. Some of them are to take ownership. Meet expectations. Be accountable. Be fair. Be honest. Be trustworthy. These are not only my expectations of others, but also of myself.

I will lead the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office with the same values I’ve held, shown, and encouraged others to follow for the past 32 years. This is my promise to you all, and the citizens of Norfolk, for as long as I am your Sheriff.

Thank you.

Sheriff Joe Baron
